Well, here we are in a new year, 2011. I hope that the new year has found you and your family healthy and still enjoying the spoils of Christmas. Not much happening on the John Wayne front so far here at Newt's John Wayne Site.

December 14th Paramount released True Grit (1969) on Blu-Ray. Also we are having the True Grit (1969) Blu-Ray Giveaway. Click the link to go to the review page for this Blu-Ray release.

As most of you are aware the directors Joel and Ethan Coen and Paramount has released True Grit (2010). The producers include Steven Spielberg and Scott Rudin. The film stars Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, Matt Damon as Texas Ranger LeBeouf, Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney, Barry Pepper as Lucky Ned Pepper, and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross. It is supposedly truer to the original book by Charles Portis. I would like to hear from you concerning your thoughts about this film being made and comparison of the two films after you have seen the new one. The production has a good pedigree with directors, producers, writers, stars, and the song is a Johnny Cash tune, that have suceeded in the past. On Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel this month there are only two John Wayne listings. First, on Tuesday, January 18th is Rookie of the Year (1955), 5:30 pm pacific time. This is a TV drama starring John Wayne, Ward Bond, Vera Miles, Patrick Wayne, James Gleason, and Willis Bouchey. It was part of a series called Screen Directors Playhouse, this one is directed by John Ford. I am sure some of you have never seen this program. The second John Wayne offering by TCM this month on January 24th is Baby Face (1933), 12:45 am pacific time (just after midnite of the 23rd). This is actually Barbara Stanwyck's movie about A beautiful schemer who sleeps her way to the top of a banking empire. John Wayne is just one of the men she climbs over to get to the top. Check your local listings for the viewing times in your area.
