We are remembering Shirley Temple who passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the age of 85. died monday 02/10/2014 at age 85. She began her career in 1932 at only four years old. She almost single-handly kept 20th Century Fox afoat in the 1930s. Her movie career was basically over by 1949, even though she had a TV series, Shirley Temple's Storybook (1958-1961). As Philadelphia Thursday in the 1948 film, Fort Apache, she co-starred with John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and her husband at the time, John Agar.
She was named a delegate to the United Nations, in 1969, by President Richard Nixon. From the late 1960s onward, she was increasingly active in Republican Party politics. She served as U.S. ambassador to Ghana (1974) United States Chief of Protocol (1976)and Czechoslovakia and held other government-related positions. In the summer of 1976, she was named Chief of Protocol for the State Department, and United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (1989).
According to author Garry Wills in "John Wayne's America", director John Ford had serious issues with women, which carried over onto his sets. When he made Wee Willie Winkie (1937) with Shirley, she was a child as well as the top box office star in America and he treated her well. When she was cast in Fort Apache (1948), she was a young woman and he did not. Like her role in Wee Willie Winkie (1937), she played the "cute but unmanageable troublemaker at the post" who is befriended by and relies on an avuncular sergeant, both times played by Victor McLaglen. McLaglen had been blackballed by Ford for the previous seven years, but was brought back into the Ford stock company with this film. When Ford met Shirley, whose husband John Agar he had also cast in the picture, he rudely asked her, "Now where did you go to school, Shirley? Did you graduate?".
Born Clay O'Brien Cooper on May 6, 1961, and best-known as the pint- sized "Hardy Fimps" in the western coming-of-age film, The Cowboys (1972). He was also in the short lived TV series of the same name (1974). He also played John Wayne's youngest son in Cahill: United State Marshal (1973) Clay O'Brien became a favorite with John Wayne, who appreciated a real cowboy when he met one. Remaining pint-sized for several years, Clay could be found in pleasant but typical Disneyesque fare throughout the 1970's before he left acting and returned to cowboying full-time, where his undisputed talent truly lies. Clay has the respect of cowboys everywhere, holding more Team-Roping championships than anyone and is the holder of Seven World titles in Team-Roping. Clay's rodeo achievements are impressive by any standard .
