Hello Pilgrims, is has been a long time since my last newsletter. My mother was very ill with kidney cancer
and she passed away earlier this year. I am just now getting back into the swing of things, I hope to be
more regular with my postings in the newsletter and blog. My recent blog posting is about the famed
director Michael Curtiz, I hope
you will check it out.
It's time again for the happenings on the John Wayne front here at Newt's John Wayne Site.
On March 6th Paramount released two 3-disc sets to DVD. The first one is theJohn
Wayne Adventure Three-Pack. This set includes Donovan's Reef, Hatari!, and In Harm's Way. The
second set is the John Wayne Western Three-pack. This set includes The Man Who Shot Liberty
Valance, Sons of Katie Elder, and The Shootist.
A double dose of John Wayne Blu-rays came moseying on down on May 8th. First is The Big
Trail, it is being issued in a blu-ray version and DVD, 2 disc set. What is great about this release is
that the original format of FOX GRANDEUR is provided. This was a new wide screen process that Fox
developed but wasn't seen by many people because of the cost of installing the equipment in theaters.
Also on May 8th also in a Blu-ray and DVD set is The
Barbarian and the Geisha. This is the first time this film has been released in the US. It is available
individually and also in a new 10-disc DVD boxed set, the John
Wayne Film Collection. The films included in this set are THE BIG TRAIL, RED RIVER, LEGEND
OF THE LOST, THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA, THE HORSE SOLDIERS, THE ALAMO,
NORTH TO ALASKA, THE COMANCHEROS, THE LONGEST DAY, and THE UNDEFEATED.
On June 5th Paramount is releasing Hondo on Blu-Ray disc. The good news about this release is that we
are having a giveaway for one copy of this Blu-Ray release. The Hondo Giveaway is open from
June 1 until June 16th, just click the link to go to the entry page. You can also view a review page for the Hondo
Blu-Ray release.
There will be a TCM Vault offering on July 2nd of the Columbia Pictures Pre-Code Collection. It will be a five-disc set containing Arizona (1931, Laura La Plante and JOHN WAYNE), Ten Cents a Dance (1931, Barbara Stanwyck), Virtue (1932, Carole Lombard), Three Wise Girls (1932, Jean Harlow), and Shopworn (1932, Barbara Stanwyck). The John Wayne entry in this set, Arizona was also titled Men Are Like That, and released in Great Britain under the title The Virtuous Wife. On August 7th there is going to be a release of Rio Grande on DVD and Blu-Ray. I will have more on these releases at a later date.
In the music section, you can get the CD of John Wayne's album America, Why I Love Her. Also there are CDs of film themes and scores and other western music.
In the books section, one page of John Wayne books and a page of books about other actors and actresses, plus books of interest about Hollywood.
There are other sections of interest such as posters and pictures of John Wayne and some of his female co-stars. There is section of John Wayne themed collectibles. The last section is Misc Goodies, items that didn't fit into the other categories. In this section are calendars, a John Wayne Monopoly game, a 1000 piece puzzle of the John Wayne 37 cent postage stamp, playing card set and even John Wayne magnets.
I hope you will visit the John Wayne Store and check out all of the interesting items that we offer. Scroll down the main store page for many specials that are of interest to John Wayne fans and classic movie fans as well. If your are not shopping at the John Wayne Store soon, you're burnin' daylight!
Your comments or suggestions are always welcome and encouraged. I am always on the look-out for John Wayne and/or classic film information to pass along in these little newsletters, if you come across any news on these subjects, please let me know.
